End of Season Review - Sunday Team

11 months ago By Andrew Matthews

A league and Cup Double for US Portsmouth Sunday team who impressed throughout the season.

The main success and silverware this season came on a Sunday with Paul O'Rielly and Craig Fenton guiding the side to an impressive league win, which came down to the last day and a cup win in the Portsmouth Sunday Cup.

A high-scoring season throughout, the US Portsmouth side managed double figures 4 times against 4 different opponents, twice in the league and topped the City of Portsmouth Sunday League Division 3 table early on and for large parts of the season.

With weather playing a part in finishing the season, the side were made to play back to back double headers against Saturn Royale and Guardsman as the end of the season grew closer and points were vital. Taking 9 points from the possible 12 meant that it was down to the last day against Wicor Mill Reserves for the title. Although the result didn't go US Portsmouth's way, the title was still to be theirs with promotion to Division 2 the ultimate prize.

Further success came in the Portsmouth Junior B Cup; with an exciting and further high scoring run to the final saw a 5-2 win over Co-Op Dragons B, a 4-1 away win in Gosport at AFC Trades, and an 11-1 win over Padnell in the quarter finals with Fraser Bricknell scoring an incredible 6. A closer semi final was edged 2-0 at Titchfield, before a close encounter with over AFC Seaway at Moneyfields saw them lead throughout and come out on top with a 3-2 win and the trophy.

In the other cups, there were early exits, as Wicor Mill Reserves punished the side early on in the season in the Challenge Cup. There was another big win in the first round of the Hampshire Junior B Cup, beating Andover Central 10-3, but a lacklustre display saw US dumped out by Hoeford United, despite having chances to impact the game, a disallowed goal and 2 penalty missed resigned them to a 4-1 defeat.

All in all it was a positive season for the group, with many players impressing and looking to move onwards and upwards next season along with the club. Well done to all involved.

Portsmouth Junior B Cup: Champions,
