End of Season Review - Reserves

1 year ago By Andrew Matthews

An up and down season, but consolidation at a higher level for the young reserve side.

Under the watchful eye of Paul Marsh for his first season in charge, the reserves started very well, but then lacked consistency as matches became few and far between with little availability of opponents, teams dropping out of the league and the weather, there were large parts on the sidelines for the squad.

The first part of the season saw 5 big wins on the bounce and the side were near the top of the table until October. 3 games without a win after 2 3-0 defeats at the hands of AFC Totton and Moneyfields were enough to put US down into 4th where they stayed for the majority of the season. A win over Wimborne Town was chalked off as they left the league amongst others and that saw the side drop another place on sides who had not managed to fulfil their fixture.

There was positivity in the cup though, despite a thrashing by a very strong Havant and Waterlooville side who were eventual finalists in the Portsmouth Senior Cup, the reserves made it through the group stage of the John Stimpson Memorial Shield, eventually losing out in the semi finals. With 3 wins out of 4 and an unbeaten group stage, it showed that the side were a force to be reckoned with on their day. Sholing fell foul of this in the quarter finals with a last minute winner sinking them 3-2, but an after extra time defeat at Moneyfields ended the run disappointingly.

Despite good early form, the side could not get past Bournemouth Manor in the Hampshire Intermediate Cup, a bye and a 4-2 win over AFC Burton saw them into the 3rd round, but the eventual finalists were too strong and saw US exit.

All in all it was a good season of consolidation for the young side, with many players joining from the under 18s and many more moving up into the first team at varying times in the season. With some playing across 2 or more teams throughout the season, the strength in depth at the club continues to improve. Well done to all the players and staff ensuring a solid season and fulfilment of all fixtures once again.

Final Round Up:

Wyvern Combination Football League Premier Division: 6th
Wyvern Challenge Cup: 2nd Round
Portsmouth Senior Cup: 2nd Round
Hampshire Intermediate Cup: 3rd Round
John Stimpson Memorial Shield: Semi Final

Reserves Golden Boot: Olly Sturt.
